1460 Narative Panels at Borobudur Temple

Borobudur was built by Sailendra dynasty at 8th century.. Located at Bumisegoro, near Magelang,Central Java Indonesia. This area around mountains, to east stand two twin mountains called Merapi and Merbabu. The north west look Sindoro and Sumbing mountains. The scenery was very spectacular.

The temple used to pilgrimage, consist of three level of world. The foot/first level namely Kamadhatu ( beneath world), human being to dominated desire. The second Rupadhatu, a middle world , where the human goes from desire, but still tied up with the name and shape. And the third Arupadhatu, high world, human life without shape and name (the world of formless)
During the journey the monument guides the pilgrims through a system of stairways and corridors with more narrative panels on the wall and the balustrades.

Reliefs

Borobudur contains approximately 2.670 individual bas relief, 1460 narrative and 1.212 decorative panels, which cover the facades and balustrades. They are distributed at the hidden foot (Kamadhatu) and the life square plat forms (Rupadhatu).
Narrative panels on the wall read from right to left, while on the balustrade read from left
to right. The hidden foot depicts the story of the karma law (Karmawibangga).
The story of Lalitawistara, jataka/awadana , Gandawyuha distributed at galleries in
Rupadhatu. Arupadhatu clean of relief.
